Timur D'Vatz is renowned for his large scale oil compositions which take inspiration from early Byzantine art, mythology, and medieval tapestries. Although his works look as though they're from another time, there are often modern twists within D'Vatz's works make them stand out amongst his contemporaries. This includes prints and symbols which establish a contemporary tone, and imbue his works with a narrative which the viewer is left to piece together. This whirlwind composition depicts a prominent theme throughout D'Vatz's oeuvre - the subject of the hunt. The hunt is a dynamic and symbolic motif throughout his works; whether it's a quest, a journey or the search for ourselves. Here we can feel the sense of movement and urgency between these characters, as a tiger leaps across the composition; surrounded by flocking figures which intertwine against a myriad of patterns. The elongated limbs of each figure generates a sense of flow and movement within the composition, whilst a warm, autumnal colour palette generates a historic, aged appearance. “I believe that an artist will always find rejuvenation in the eternal youth of the ancients; in core ideas that do not lose meaning as time passes, but rather gain new significance with each historical transition” Amidst a patchwork of patterns and mythical figures, D'Vatz encapsulates us in a myriad of warm hues and leafy prints, reminiscent of a Williams Morris wallpaper. Each figure emerges subtly amongst these patterns, all with distinctively similar elongated faces, perhaps a nod to medieval styles of painting. This piece, like many of the best artworks, leaves us with many questions - who are these figures, and where are they going? D’Vatz's works look almost like historical artefacts; they have a delicate fragility to them that makes them look as though they belong within historic and religious frameworks, only to be admired at arms length. His attention to detail is evident within the intricacy of his patterns, which take inspiration from ancient legends and symbols, re-contextualised within a contemporary setting to create his own mythology of sorts. D'Vatz is an innovative artist and storyteller whose works reflect his ample experience as a painter; any piece from his collection would make an exciting addition to any contemporary art collection, space, or home.
