In Timur D'Vatz's 'Blue Falcon', a lone figure is submerged in a sea of greens and blues. A bird emerges from the right, guiding us toward the figure on the left - who are they? Ornate patterns are lifted to the foreground of this piece, giving a similar impact to Gustav Klimt’s gold leaf compositions, which encapsulate their figures in a blanket of patterns and textures. A Russian artist, D’Vatz’s is renowned for his large scale oil compositions which take inspiration from early Byzantine art, mythology, and medieval tapestries. Although his works look as though they're from another time, there are often modern twists within D'Vatz's works which make them distinctive. The depictions of printed fabrics and wallpapers within his oeuvre establish a contemporary tone, whilst a warm colour palette generates an almost aged appearance - its these contrasts that captivate us, and make D'Vatz's compositions so endlessly engaging. “I draw my inspiration from ancient histories, early Byzantine art, medieval tapestries and mythology” The theme of the hunt is a dynamic and symbolic motif throughout D'Vatz's works; whether it's a quest, a journey or the search for ourselves. Elongated limbs give an air of fluidity and movement throughout D'Vatz's oeuvre, as though the figures in his works are living, breathing beings on a journey of some kind. The figure in 'Blue Falcon' emerges subtly amongst these hectic patterns, with a distinctively elongated face, perhaps a nod to medieval styles of painting. D’Vatz's works look almost like historical artefacts; they have a delicate fragility to them that makes them look as though they belong within historic and religious frameworks, to be admired at arms length. The artist's astounding attention to detail is evident within the intricacy of his patterns, which take inspiration from ancient legends and symbols, re-contextualised within a contemporary setting to create his own mythology of sorts. D'Vatz is an innovative artist and storyteller whose works reflect his ample experience as a painter; any piece from Timur D'Vatz's collection would make an exciting addition to any contemporary art collection, space, or home.
