'Le Voyage Fantastique' is a brand new series of contemporary paintings by Karenina Fabrizzi. A refined collection of works that are full of depth and meaning, this breathtaking series explores themes such as self discovery, the human condition, and nature. Although a figurative series, there are abstract elements which establish a contemporary flair, and generate new dimensions within each piece. The last of the series, 'La Voyage Fantastique (3)' portrays another female figure, though this time, looking upwards, she is a vision of hope. Perhaps she is looking towards the light at the end of the tunnel? Has she has reached the end of her "voyage"? Made using a mix of oil, acrylic, pastels and gold leaf, Fabrizzi spent months experimenting and developing unique ways of working, truly enhancing each composition. Through mixing acrylic and oil medium, Fabrizzi has established her own method of creating a marbled-effect surface, which harmoniously elevates the more refined areas within the composition. Fabrizzi's works are multidimensional; they are a visual metaphor for the layers and dimensions within people. Fabrizzi is fascinated with the concept as the body as a container for both the physical and the emotional - each brushstroke represents the various emotions, memories, thoughts and experiences within each individual. On the surface, we can see each layer of the composition, from the first to last, whilst the outline of the figure cages these multifaceted textures - a vessel for the depth and complexities of the human condition. “We have the physical body; we have many different dimensions in one kind. This is something that I want people to see – we are not just something solid... I try to send this message with my work” Fabrizzi often turns to nature for inspiration, as she believes it to be our biggest teacher. Whilst flowers and plants live in acceptance and harmony, humans are complicated beings who often overthink their existence. Fabrizzi feels we should turn to nature for guidance; in order to live in the present, and to reach a point of true self acceptance. The inclusion of entwining flora and botanical imagery reflects this, reminding us of our deep connection to nature. “Nature for me, is our teacher” Many of Fabrizzi's works look magical, as though taken from a historic fairytale. Emphasised by the use of gold leaf, her works shimmer and glow, drawing the eye in. In the same method as the Japanese Kintsugi, this piece has the same quality as broken porcelain, fused together with gold leaf, embracing the flaws and imperfections which make us who we are. Her works express the beauty of these vulnerabilities, and encourage us to confront and accept them, in order to become our truest selves. Fabrizzi takes a very fluid and intuitive approach to working; each piece within this series was painted simultaneously, without a specific order. This intuitive way of working is evident in the final product - the various textures, dripping and fragmented aspects give a sense of movement throughout the works, as though they are constantly changing and evolving, in the same way we are. Many of Fabrizzi's previous works are focused around the concept of masking our true selves; these works display a turning point within her work. Here the masks are removed, exposing and embracing the flaws and fluctuations of the human condition. Fabrizzi's works encourage us to be brave - they speak to us, whilst also allowing us to apply our own meanings and narratives. They push us to live in the present, and to explore our true needs and desires. Full of texture, light, and depth, Karenina Fabrizzi's works demand to be experienced in the flesh. Dark yet delicate, with an organic palette that would compliment any space, any piece from this series would make a valuable investment, and a stunning addition to any contemporary art collection, business space or home.
